Why Commercial Vermicomposting?
With government subsidies of up to 50% under PKVY and PARAMPARAGAT KRISHI VIKAS YOJANA schemes, and growing domestic demand from organic farmers, commercial vermicompost production offers one of the best ROIs in agri-entrepreneurship at ₹12–18 lakh per unit investment.
Worm Species Selection
Two primary species for commercial production in India:
- Eisenia fetida (Red Wigglers): Best for controlled conditions; processes waste 2× faster; produces higher-quality castings with superior microbial diversity. Preferred for premium vermicompost.
- Lumbricus rubellus: More heat-tolerant; suitable for outdoor beds in warmer climates; slightly lower casting quality but easier management.
Stocking density: 1 kg of worms (approximately 1,000 worms) per square foot of bed area. Starting with 500 kg for a 500 sq ft unit is recommended.
Bed Design Specifications
| Parameter | Specification | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Bed width | 90–120 cm | Allows manual turning from both sides |
| Bed height | 30–45 cm | Optimal aeration; >50 cm causes anaerobic core |
| Bed length | As required | No limitation; typically 10–20 m for efficiency |
| Shade requirement | 90% shade net | Worms die in direct sunlight; maintain 15–28°C |
| Moisture | 60–70% | Squeeze test: few drops of water from handful |
Feeding Protocol
The key to high-quality vermicompost is the pre-composting step — never feed fresh materials directly to worms:
- Mix agricultural waste with 10–15% cow dung slurry
- Pre-compost in open heaps for 15–21 days until material is dark brown with earthy smell and temperature drops to ambient
- Apply pre-composted material in 5–7 cm layers every 7–10 days
- Keep C:N ratio of feeding material between 20:1 and 30:1 for fastest processing
Harvesting & Quality Standards
Vermicompost is ready for harvest in 45–60 days. Stop watering 3–4 days before harvest to encourage worms to migrate toward moisture. Spread a fresh layer of feed material on top — worms migrate up, leaving cured castings below for easy separation.
Premium quality vermicompost specifications:
- Organic Carbon: >14%
- Nitrogen (N): 1.5–2.5%
- Phosphorus (P₂O₅): 1.0–2.0%
- Potassium (K₂O): 0.8–1.5%
- C:N Ratio: 15:1 to 20:1
- Moisture: <25%
- pH: 6.8–7.2
- No weed seeds (test required for certification)
