Understanding Seaweed Extract
Seaweed extract, particularly from Ascophyllum nodosum (Norwegian kelp) and Sargassum species, contains a unique combination of:
- Cytokinins: Natural plant growth hormones that promote cell division and delay senescence
- Alginic acid: A soil conditioner that improves water retention and aggregation
- Mannitol: A chelating agent that improves micronutrient uptake
- Betaines: Osmoprotectants that buffer plants against heat and drought stress
- Macro and micronutrients: Including naturally occurring iodine, which improves produce shelf life
Application Windows for Maximum Response
Window 1: Seedling Stage (10–15 DAS)
Apply at 2–3 mL/L as a soil drench or foliar spray. At this stage, cytokinin activity promotes lateral root proliferation — expanding the root surface area by 20–35% which dramatically improves nutrient and water uptake for the entire crop cycle.
Window 2: Active Vegetative Growth
Apply at 2 mL/L foliar spray every 15 days during rapid vegetative growth. This maintains high chlorophyll levels and supports photosynthesis efficiency. Combine with amino acid liquid (1 mL/L) for synergistic results.
Window 3: Flowering & Fruit Set (Critical)
Apply at 3 mL/L, 5 days before flowering and immediately after fruit set. Cytokinin content prevents flower drop and stimulates parthenocarpic fruit development in stress conditions. This is the single most yield-impactful application timing.
Window 4: Fruit Development
Apply at 2 mL/L to improve fruit sizing, color development (due to improved sugars), and post-harvest shelf life. The iodine content naturally extends vase life for cut flowers and shelf life for fruits by 2–4 days.
