Growing Rice with Organic Fertilizers
Rice (Oryza sativa) is the world's most important food crop, feeding over 3.5 billion people. Achieving high yields with sustainable organic inputs is essential for long-term soil health and food security.
Soil Preparation
Rice thrives in heavy clay or loamy soils with good water retention. Before transplanting, incorporate 2–4 tonnes of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) per acre into the puddled soil. This enhances microbial activity and improves nutrient availability during the critical tillering stage.
Key Nutrient Requirements
- Nitrogen (N): 80–120 kg/ha, split into 3 doses — basal, tillering, panicle initiation
- Phosphorus (P₂O₅): 40–60 kg/ha applied as basal dose
- Potassium (K₂O): 40–80 kg/ha, half basal, half at panicle initiation
- Zinc (Zn): 25 kg/ha zinc sulfate once in 3 seasons
Organic Input Recommendations
Use bio-fertilizers such as Azospirillum and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) for seed treatment. Apply seaweed extract at 2 mL/L at 20, 40, and 60 days after transplanting for better tillering and grain filling.
Water Management
Maintain 2–5 cm of standing water during tillering. Practice Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) after panicle initiation to reduce water use by 30% without yield loss.
